Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Katrina R. Sparks, Founder of Spark A Child, located in Bronx, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Spark A Child. I am an independent contractor providing special education/instruction, speech, Applied Behavior Analysis(ABA), and educational evaluations to children from birth to 3 years of age diagnosed with developmental delays.
Tell us about yourself
My career path was to become a Speech Pathologist. At the age of four, my son was diagnosed with Autism. This changed my career path to wanting to learn more about Autism and other developmental and physical disabilities that impact parents and their families. As a result, I became my son’s advocate to ensure he was receiving the necessary services and resources while I worked with children similar to my son and further my education in the field. My motivation is my son, to see how he is thriving and evolving into a productive and working adult.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is seeing the progress of the children I have worked with over the years. How is have impacted their lives? Many of my children/students, despite the diagnosis and the challenges they faced, have moved on to attend college and work. Last year I decided to share with the world my life story, the challenges, and the triumphs I have faced by writing a book.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest challenge I faced was having to talk to the parents of children diagnosed with Autism. Many parents worry about the future and fate of their children. I speak to them as a mother and then as a therapist because I have traveled the road, they will soon embark upon.
