What's your business, and who are your customers?

I write Christian books for conservative Christians, especially the Mennonite community. I am currently writing a non-denominational Christian adventure series for kids.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve been writing all my life. Just recently, I have been leveraging that interest and background into a self-publishing business. My husband’s business acumen has helped me in this.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have managed to survive in a very difficult arena - self-publishing middle-grade books!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I need a lot of cash to maintain inventory. I’ve also made a lot of mistakes that have been costly. But I enjoy the learning process.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t be afraid to fail.
  2. Celebrate unsubscribes - you don’t want the wrong people on your list.
  3. Invest in education, but don’t feel that you need to follow every piece of advice.
