What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a social media page for Organic Gardening on Instagram that has grown and monetized itself, leading me to begin a micro business for gardening consulting, courses, ebooks, and a small e-commerce store. I specialize in organic, raised bed gardening to help people create useful food gardens that are eco-friendly, non-toxic, and low-cost.
Tell us about yourself
My grandmother taught me to garden as a young kid, as she was raised on a farm and always grew tomatoes and green beans. I've had a garden in every house I have lived in so far, so when my family moved into a new house, we started a small bed. When the pandemic hit, I began expanding the garden and the Instagram page, which turned into more than a hobby.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The biggest accomplishment I have in the business is taking my passion and turning it into a small business. I have been in sales in the EdTech world for over ten years, and the hustle began wearing on me, and I never thought I was capable of starting my own business. I turned to the garden as a hobby to relieve some anxiety, but realized I could do more with it and began Katie's Organic Gardening page.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, the hardest part has been deciding where to prioritize time, money, and resources to grow substantially, as there is very little of it to go around at the beginning.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
