Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katia Davis, Owner of Katia Yoga, located in Hilo, HI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I live, love, and breathe yoga and Reiki! I love teaching, so I do in-person classes here in Hilo, and I'm getting into virtual self-paced courses. I'm working on a chakra healing series, Reiki certification courses, moon manifestation, candle-making, and more! I also wrote a book titled "Balancing the Rainbow Within" for balancing the chakras with 30 daily suggestions for each of the 7 main chakras. I have an Etsy shop where I create my own designs for leggings, yoga mats (like the one pictured), tanks, mala necklaces, and more! I share my journey and blog about yoga and Reiki on my websites and on Instagram.

Tell us about yourself

I lived and traveled in Asia for nearly a decade before settling in Hawai'i. I love learning and experiencing new things and take every opportunity I can find. I am especially drawn to healing practices like yoga and Reiki. For me, teaching is like telling a juicy secret, and I can't help but tell everyone all of the amazing things I've discovered along the way. It started with blogging, and it's grown from there!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think course creation is my biggest accomplishment at the moment. I wouldn't have guessed I would be someone that could talk into a camera, but I actually really enjoy it. I'm thinking of the people I can help with the ideas I'm sharing. I'm also excited about teaching my first Reiki Master 3-day training in person in the Fall. I want to get into hosting more retreats too.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Balance! It's hard to find time, energy, and passion for everything you need to do. I wake up and go to sleep thinking about my creative projects, and it's sometimes hard to stay involved in the day-to-day things I have to do to keep everything in business and home life going. Plus, I still like to go to classes and keep up with friends and such too. I know I'm not the only one who has way more things that they want to do than time to do them, but it can be tricky.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it! Dive in. It's ok if you don't feel ready or if it's messy at the start.
  2. Have fun. Make sure it's something you're passionate about and will enjoy doing day to day. And if it turns out it's not quite right, don't be afraid to pivot.
  3. Take time to take care of yourself. Don't forget to nourish within - you can't pour from an empty cup.
