Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katheryn Brauckmann, Owner of Totum Counseling and Consulting Services LLC, located in King of Prussia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a private practice providing individual counseling to adults (those over 18). I supervise those seeking their clinical social work and counseling license in PA. I also provide immigration evaluations for those seeking entrance to the US under hardship and asylum cases. In the future will be providing mediation for custody, divorce, and civil cases.

Tell us about yourself

As a social worker, I have worked in a variety of settings, such as inpatient drug and alcohol, homeless shelters and outpatient counseling. Over the years, I have learned a lot about what people need and want and realized I could provide it. We want a supportive relationship where we can share about who we are. We want to celebrate accomplishments and gain perspective and support on the difficult things. We want someone to listen. I see therapy as being most about holding time and space sacred for whatever needs addressing. It is about being present for someone and exploring solutions and perspectives. I am curious and compassionate. I want to help people understand themselves and get their needs met.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We started the year before the pandemic and grew very quickly. In under 5 years, not only were we surviving, but we are profitable. Being able to try new things (such as making therapy boxes filled with treats and tools) has been a huge accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are a lot of areas you have to focus on. I can't just provide therapy. I have to think about legal and financial and marketing and on and on. At times it's hard to know where to focus but being organized and asking questions help.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Join groups in your field to get advice and suggestions and network.
  2. Think about how the business meets your needs, not just serves your clients.
  3. Growth needs to be scaled to need. Don't just grow to grow. How is it helpful to you?
