Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katherine Hyatt, Founder of Branches of Growth Mental Health Counseling and Yoga Studio, located in N Syracuse, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We offer holistic mental health counseling both in person and via telehealth to individuals, couples, and groups. We work with those throughout New York State and we serve people aged five and up. We also provide yoga, sound healing, and reiki services to the Central New York community.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business in 2014 in hopes of one day being able to work part-time and be home with my family the remainder of the time. In 2015, I suffered a tremendous loss to suicide, and it changed my purpose for me in the mental health field. I never wanted someone to feel so lonely and lost that suicide is the only option. I also personally knew the intense suffering that occurs with trauma. My goal began in 2016 to create a space of healing through not only counseling but other healing methods such as yoga and reiki.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Yoga teacher, and Holy Fire Level 2 Reiki Practitioner. I found holistic methods extremely helpful in my own healing, bringing my mind, body, and spirit back into alignment. The community has been very receptive and continues to reinforce the need for support. The practice found a permanent location in 2019 with multiple offices and a yoga studio. We are so honored to now have six teachers (yoga, sound and reiki) that utilize our healing space, 17 clinicians associated with the practice throughout New York, four interns, and five administration staff with 2 locations. We are an insurance-based practice, as our mission is to provide services for our entire community. We also offer promo codes and many options to attend our classes for those requiring financial assistance.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment is finding a tribe of people to join the community who share the same beliefs and ethics surrounding mental health. The business has had many ups and downs and is still very difficult at times, reconfigured, shifted as needed but we do the same as everyone else; One day at a time. I have an amazing admin staff, clinicians, and teachers that support each other every day. I feel honored that they have joined me on this mission to help our community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the hardest challenge is not to take things personally. I work extremely hard every day, not only for my family but also for my clients, the community, and those associated with my business. I want everyone to be successful, feel supported, and reach their full potential. It is hard to separate who I am from the business sometimes, but it's a work in progress!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take it slow. Get as much knowledge as you can. People will join you if you know the ins and outs of your business.
  2. Be confident. People will push you around if you let them.
  3. Find your team. Get people around you that can support you, offer sound advice, and inspire you!
