Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kat Gal, Freelance Writing Mentor and Founder of No Hustle Freelance, located in Milwaukee, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a freelance health writer and freelance writing mentor. As a freelance health writer, I write long-form content for functional medicine doctors and health/nutrition brands at katgalwriter.com. I've been writing in the health space for about a decade, and I love it. I also have a blog and a course for freelance writers. My course, No Hustle Freelance Writer Course, helps newbies and struggling freelance writers find clients and create a sustainable business.

Tell us about yourself

It was a pure accident. I was trying to build a health coaching business. I was blogging and guest blogging to promote my coaching services, and people suddenly started to reach out for writing work. I had no idea freelance writing was a thing. It took me a while to realize that making money writing was a thing and a valid option. Once I realized it, there was no return. I immediately felt right at home. Freelance writing completely changed my life. This is why I created my freelance writing course. I want to empower new and struggling freelancers to make their dream a reality and make money writing. The idea of a course popped up years ago. I tried to talk myself out of it. There are enough courses out there. But the idea never went away. It was an itch I needed to scratch. I knew I had something to offer. Creating and releasing my course was one of the best things I've ever done. You can find my course here.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Everything. I didn't grow up in a family with business owners. In fact, being a business owner was something that was looked down on. When I started freelance writing, everyone doubted me. I'm not even exaggerating here. Everyone told me it was a bad idea, that I should grow up and get a real job. But I kept going and did it.

I'm incredibly proud that I accomplished this without hustling. My goal was to work part-time but make a comfortable full-time income. Most people believe that you have to hustle and overwork for years, so eventually, down the line, you can work less. I refused to believe in this concept. I worked part-time hours from the beginning and absolutely refused to hustle. I wanted to organize my work around my life, not the other way around. I did that from the very first day.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I found that the most difficult parts tend to come from within. Imposter syndrome, self-sabotage, doubting myself, or comparing myself to other people still pop up from time to time, even a decade into my business journey.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Remember, it's not an overnight thing. The internet is full of quick fixes and quick rich scams. It's not like that. It takes time to create a sustainable business, even if you are immediately successful in your first month.
  2. Stop comparing yourself to other people. Everyone is sharing their highlights anyways. Just work at your own pace and embrace the process.
  3. If you are looking to get into freelance writing:
    • Pick a writing specialty and niche.
    • Nail down your ideal client.
    • Research your ideal client.
    • Create a high-quality portfolio relevant to your ideal client (self-published posts, guest posts, and mock-ups are okay!).
    • Start cold emailing to get clients!
