Tell us about yourself

"Millions of people take digital photos every day... but can they make a piece of ART?" — KASHA

I was groomed to be a painter but ended up in the interior design program only to fall in love with photography thirty years ago. I volunteered for the school paper as an entertainment photographer to shoot rock concerts. This launched me into exhibiting my work in unusual spaces and experimenting with film, printing, and projection. It is in my nature to challenge conventional ideals, and I prefer to create my own opportunities. It would be accurate to describe me as an entrepreneur artist in charge of my career. The world around me inspires me, and I am motivated by love, beauty, and the pursuit of art.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every time a piece sells or a commission comes in, and when my work is delivered and installed is an accomplishment. Paying the bills is an accomplishment. All of them are big because I am able to continue on my path and hopefully accomplish a lifetime full of happy collectors.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

In the art business, the competition between galleries is fierce! There are way too many art galleries pushing the same big names and the same trends that original art by a living artist struggles to maintain its integrity. The 'pop art' resurgence has shifted the public's attention from learning about what art is to buying plagiarized art because they recognize the brand. This has created a huge gap between galleries that are 'cashing in' and those producing genuine art. The hardest thing is actually making a sale.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have capital to float the expenses for at least 3 years.
  2. Do your homework about supply and demand.
  3. Never give up!!
