Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karla Adkins, an author, and coach, based in Pawleys Island, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Karla Adkins, and I am an author and a coach. My first book, And She Came Tumbling Down, just came out in September 2022. I am also a Co-Founder of The Zero Proof Life, where I coach with 4 other amazing women helping people find freedom from alcohol.

Tell us about yourself

Once I found freedom from alcohol, I knew I wanted to create a safe space for others to find freedom as well. The number of people getting sick from alcohol use is continuing to grow, and that in itself motivates me to keep telling my story and helping remove the shame that struggling with this substance carries. At The Zero Proof Life, we help people find freedom from alcohol, AND we also have a beautiful space to support people navigating life after they have stopped drinking.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping just one person find freedom from alcohol is probably the biggest accomplishment I can think of. Seeing someone break free from alcohol's grip is something that will never get old for me. It's absolutely beautiful to see.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I've learned keeping good boundaries around my work hours is extremely important. It's so easy to fall into working all the time, leading to overwhelming and burnout.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do something that fills you up! Being passionate about what you do for a living is key.
  2. Put your energy into the things that you are good at and fill your cup up, hire out for the things that drain you or you don't know how to do.
  3. Write out a mission statement for yourself, and when making decisions about your business, make sure it aligns with your purpose. It's easy to get distracted by other things.
