Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karen Puttick, Founder of The Hypnotic Happiness Coach, located in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I empower people of all ages to become happier, healthier versions of themselves in any or all aspects of life. My range of ‘tools’ is vast - scientific evidence-based hypnotherapy, healing, coaching, and bodywork, through to the more esoteric. I consider myself a healer in the world’s broadest and narrowest senses.

Tell us about yourself

I started out over 30 years ago, training as an allergy therapist to support my baby, who had severe allergies. I discovered I could help people! So I  trained in healing, mindfulness, clinical hypnotherapy, coaching, and many other disciplines so I could help as many people as possible. I also took occasional part-time employment for a change of scene and to boost my knowledge of specific sectors. I love the variety of my work and clients - each day is a new challenge.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I consider each successful outcome for a client as an accomplishment! I have also won gold ‘Shining Star’ business awards for my work with children and as a therapist and have been a speaker at the United Kingdom Hypnosis Convention for several years.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Maintaining a consistent flow of work without too many peaks and troughs is a real challenge for a sole trader. And consistency - keeping the visibility momentum steady. It can also be lonely, but I created The Healing Tree Network to support other holistic practitioners and their specific business needs.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be you! Authenticity is crucial when you are the face of your business.
  2. Have fun! If creating and running your own business doesn’t make you happy - what’s the point?
  3. Don’t be afraid to support your fledgling business with a part-time job! It can help not just your cash flow but also your mental health.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Not every idea is a good one, and some things don’t work, but that’s okay! A mindset that accepts everything as learning and not failure is well worth cultivating.
