What's your business, and who are your customers?
I wear a few hats. I'm a plain language pro unraveling legal, financial, pension, benefits, B2B docs. A copywriter who simplifies and sells. And I'm an author and coach. I work with communication pros and insurance, government, and financial organizations needing copywriting or plain language services.
Tell us about yourself
I started out in the marketing department of a large insurance company. I did my MBA and then, after a few years, moved into benefit communication consulting full-time. I went freelance in 2006 and had been working on my own ever since. Freelance allows me to pursue my creative writing and passions as well. I've published two books on spiritual topics and offer karmic astrology services to mostly professionals. Freedom and variety motivate me, and I love building trusting relationships with clients and colleagues.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Freedom, doing what I want.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The uncertainty. Defining what "success" means to me - for me, it's not just money, status, or building a large company. It's freedom, flexibility, living my purpose, and self-growth. This path is not for the faint of heart. But also... I could not see myself doing anything else.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- You don't have to choose "one" way to make money - when you start out, investigate a combination of activities that you enjoy. Active income, passive income, whatever. You get to build this your way.
- Your business growth and your personal growth are linked. Do not ignore the personal side. Work with a mentor or coach who's done what you want to do. Have a vision of where you want to go and what's important to you, your "why."
- Heal your relationship with money to expand your capacity to receive. Actively manage your money and have some reserves. Surround yourself with advisors who have been where you are and succeeded.
