What's your business, and who are your customers?
We provide individual, couples, and family therapy for depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, or substance use disorders. Our customers are First Responders and community members who carry emotional injuries.
Tell us about yourself
I am a former police officer who became a therapist because I made a poor decision. I didn't manage my mental health when I was in the profession. I became an author and used my life as a case study to explore what caused me to suffer in silence. I created my private practice as a safe space for first responders who fear speaking to others outside their profession. I get it, and now I work to help First responders remain fit for duty. I felt like I didn't have anyone I could go to when dealing with burnout, so now I am that person I wish I had for other men and women in uniform.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Helping people realize that counseling is not for crazy people but people who have experienced crazy things in their lives. I pride myself on assisting people metaphorically, knowing they don't have to let their emotional wounds drip dry. Counseling is a disinfectant. Being genuine and empathic in this process has provided me with greater fulfillment than any financial gain.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Trial and error. It's one of the hardest things, but you learn a great deal from it.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get out of your own way.
- Don't be afraid of making errors.
- Work hard today, and enjoy tomorrow.
