Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Roni Kramer, Founder & CEO of Kamedis, located in Tel Aviv, Israel.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kamedis develops effective skincare solutions using active ingredients derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Our extensive in vitro research and clinical studies allow us to develop highly effective solutions for individuals with sensitive skin and various skin conditions. Our customers include anyone who suffers from skin issues, from young children with eczema to individuals with sensitive skin or those who are conscious of what they put on their skin. We understand that what we put on our skin is just as significant as what we digest, so we take great care in sourcing our botanicals, finding new synergies for maximum efficacy, and extracting them using our proprietary process. Our commitment to safety, quality, and efficacy is why our customers choose Kamedis, particularly those concerned about maintaining a healthy skin microbiome with diverse microorganisms.

Tell us about yourself

My own experience with skin issues and asthma inspired me to study Chinese Medicine and pursue a career in dermatology. After years of conventional treatments that provided only temporary relief, I was amazed by the effectiveness of Chinese Medicine. I decided to deepen my knowledge in this field by earning a master's degree in Chinese Medicine and opening a clinic where I could help others with their skin issues using natural remedies. As a practitioner, I found that many patients struggled, like me before, to find the right topical solutions for their skin issues. I wanted to create a brand that focused on Chinese medicinal botanicals that were safe, effective, and of high quality. And thus, Kamedis was born. What motivates me each day is the knowledge that our products can have a significant impact on people's lives. Hearing testimonials from individuals who claim that we've changed their lives is truly rewarding and reminds me of why I do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment as a business owner has been introducing a new approach to the market that can have a tremendous impact on people's quality of life. While the approach is based on an old tradition, I was determined to integrate it with a rigorous scientific approach and introduce it to the mass market. In addition to growing the company, I take pride in seeing Kamedis's employees grow and develop with us. Each Kamedis member leaves their imprint on the brand, making it a unique and special place to work. We're committed to sustainability and have worked hard to implement it throughout our supply chain and office habits. Our efforts have paid off - we've been able to reduce our carbon emissions, switch to using environmentally friendly packaging, and make a significant step towards having sustainably sourced ingredients wherever we can. We're proud of our progress and will continue to prioritize sustainability in everything we do.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner, one of the hardest things is the immense responsibility that comes with it - for the company, its employees, and its customers. It can result in many sleepless nights, especially when faced with daily crises such as supply chain issues, financial shortages, inventory imbalances, and quality problems. As a woman and mother of five children, I face the added complexity of balancing family life while running a business. It took some time for me to find the right balance, which did come at a price for the business and family. Even now, as my children have grown up and my husband is content with his life, I still feel guilty at times. But I think that's just built into the DNA of motherhood. Despite these challenges, being a business owner has its rewards. It allows me to pursue my passion and contribute to the growth of the company. I'm grateful for the challenge and the support of my husband and children.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If you're looking to start, run, and grow a business, here are my top three tips:

  1. Understand the need, market, and competition before anything else. Take time to create a preliminary business model and have a clear vision for the next 3-5 years. Make sure your motivation is strong enough to support you in the long run.
  2. Choose the right partners to work with. Running a business alone can be challenging, so it's better to work with partners who share your vision and can bring complementary skills and resources.
  3. Ensure that you have enough resources to reach a significant milestone that will either make the business self-sufficient or more attractive for investment. This can mean having enough financial resources, a strong team, or a unique product or service that sets you apart from the competition.
