Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karen Natzel, Founder of K Communications, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am in the business of helping leaders shape authentic and inspiring cultures. My customers are public and private organizations navigating growth and change - leaders who are ready to raise their game by doing the deep work to improve their capacity to lead.

Tell us about yourself

I accidentally started my business in 2003 when I was laid off as a marketing/business development director. I took that time to be patient and deliberate about what was next. What I didn't expect was the calls for help from business owners. I loved serving them in strategy and branding - yet I realized a calling for the work behind the scenes - what I call "business therapy." I discovered an authentic brand requires a robust culture. I am motivated to help people cultivate their potential and create a work environment where people can thrive.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I still vividly remember the first person I coached. He was almost 20 years my senior and seemingly stubborn in his ways. After our 3-month program, not only did he shift his approach at work to build healthier relationships, he shared with me that his relationship with his 14-year-old son had improved because of how he was choosing to show up. Making a real impact is immensely satisfying!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Juggling all the roles and responsibilities! Learning how to delegate, let go, and stay disciplined. It's a total personal growth journey!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your value.
  2. Build your network and tap into it; find a mentor - especially in areas that are not your strengths.
  3. Foster a growth mindset - keep learning and loving what you do.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be of service to others. Know why you do what you do to keep yourself inspired, focused, and evolving.
