Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Junmo Lee, owner of Junmo Lee Photography, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own and operate a photography studio specializing in professional headshots, portraits, and commercial photography. My clients include business professionals, lawyers, consultants, and high school seniors. Basically, anyone needing a professional photo.

Tell us about yourself

I spent over 21 years in the corporate office, mostly with Fortune 500 firms but also with technical and startup companies. Fourteen years ago, I decided I wanted to add more creativity to my life, so I picked up the camera again after a long hiatus and started my photography studio. I really do enjoy creating photos of people because people are so diverse and interesting, and I would go as far as say the most important subject matter there is. Being able to create an image that makes people see themselves in a new light and bring a sense of confidence, pride, and even happiness to them is something that I never tire of.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is leaving my corporate job to set off on my own. To be more in charge of my direction and setting truly personal goals is more rewarding than meeting work goals within the corporate world. That said, every time my clients are amazed at how good they look in the photos we create would be my biggest accomplishment as a professional photographer. I strive for that experience every time someone steps in front of my camera.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a solopreneur can be very lonely. Of the very few things I miss about my corporate life are the co-workers that were also friends. But when the best thing about work is going to lunch to gripe about work with your co-workers, that is a good sign to change things up. But not having co-workers to bounce ideas off of or just brainstorm in general can be trying on days when you’re not as motivated. Luckily, I have friends and fellow photographers I can chat with and meet for lunch or collaborate on a photo shoot together. We may still vent to each other, but at the same time, we build each other up and provide support and encouragement.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My best advice to anyone wanting to start, run and grow their own business is not to think you have to do it alone. Not talking about hiring employees, but good if you can, but seek out other successful business owners and get their advice. They don’t even need to be in the same field as you. In fact, you might learn more from others that do something completely different from what you do. Getting multiple perspectives is really helpful in running a business. At the same time, seek out a mentor in your field. The advice you receive will be invaluable and really help you move forward and eventual success.
