Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julie Shafer, Ph.D., Psychologist & Relationship Coach, located in Oak Grove, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I coach women after divorce to help them recover and find new love. It's my mission to keep women from repeating the same relationship mistakes, get to a much better place in life, and actually find the love and emotional connection they know is out there.

Tell us about yourself

I believe all problems are interpersonal problems, and it's my passion to help people live their best life. In order to do that, we all need to figure out our interpersonal problems. Otherwise, our best life is a struggle when it doesn't have to be that hard. I love listening to people and helping them sort out what's best for them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Staying in business for over 15 years! Figuring out how to market what I do (I'm still working on this one!) and helping hundreds of people gain clarity on their relationship problems and what to do about them. I love coaching and running a business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Running the business and doing things that are not part of being a coach and psychologist. I've had to deal with accounting questions, tech problems, and how to hire assistants. None of this is about coaching people on relationships, but all are vital to running a successful business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be prepared to do things that you have no idea how to do and get advice from experts,
  2. When you work with people, listening is the most important skill to develop--assume anyone you talk to has something to teach you,
  3. Have patience and perseverance; it's going to take longer and be harder than you imagine. Anything worth doing is worth doing awkwardly at first!
