Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julie McCullough, Owner of Julie M Studios, located in Huntsville, AL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a designer and artist. I help businesses visually tell their story and brands create a story. I am working mainly with small businesses and retailers.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the design and art business for over 20 years and love creating each and every day. My favorite part of the job is bringing life to a space or telling a story through illustration. I am known for my use of color in a project and always try to have bright and fun palettes. This is what motivates me each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This is a hard question because I feel I have so many accomplishments. I have won several awards for interior design and graphic design. I have a long list of clients, small businesses, and Fortune 500 companies. However, my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the privilege of working in a job I love each and every day.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a solopreneur, you wear so many hats, and you have to realize you will not be good at every one of them. For me, that is marketing, I am great at finding, nurturing, and keeping partnerships, but networking is not my strong suit. I love that I have worked with many of my clients for over 10 years, but I still have to get out and network and find new connections.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Belief in yourself. If you don't believe in yourself, no one else will either. This is so important to starting and growing a business.
  2. Set SMART Goals. You will not get ahead if you don't set some goals along with those set actions to get to each of your goals.
  3. Know your target audience. You can't market to everyone, narrow down to your dream client and focus your marketing on them.
