Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in professional development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Juliana Rabbi, a career coach based in Barcelona, Spain.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Career Coach, and I help professionals to land remote jobs faster. Especially since the pandemic happened, more and more people are seriously considering working remotely, but they don’t know how to start, which options are available and how to effectively land a remote job – and that is exactly what I help my clients with. I have been working remotely since 2014 (way before COVID!), and I love helping others to create a more flexible life and be happy about their jobs.

Tell us about yourself

I worked for +15 years as an international recruiter, interviewing candidates from all over the world. In 2019, after working remotely for around six years, I decided to quit my full-time remote job and start my own business. My main motivation at the time was that I wanted to be able to travel more. Now, almost three years later, I feel motivated by the flexibility I have to organize my own agenda, the ability to keep learning every day, and the creativity part that drives my work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Prove to myself that I could make it happen. I came from a family where everyone had a “traditional stable job,” and there was not even a single entrepreneur or business owner around, so this is all very new to me – and exciting at the same time! Also, I am very proud of every single person I could help to improve their careers and live a life according to their own rules. I like that my business has a direct impact on people’s lives!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Taking care of the parts of the business that I don’t enjoy doing or I don’t know how to do. Step by step, I am starting to outsource those tasks to free myself to concentrate on the activities I really like and feel in flow, but I still do (a lot of) things I wish to stop doing soon!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Go step by step. Running a business takes time. If you currently have a job or a side gig, keep doing that in parallel until you are making enough money with your business to quit them – this is what I did, and it helped me to remove the pressure of making money from day 1, so I could focus in learning and improvement. I also suggest looking for mentors and/or coaches from the beginning. The investment is totally worth it, and in the long term, you will save time and energy.

Last but not least, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel! Remove the pressure from your shoulders to create something “completely new and innovative.” If people already have businesses that offer a similar service or product, this is actually a good side because it confirms there is a real demand. You can do things with your “personal touch,” which will differentiate you from others, but you don’t need to create a business idea from scratch.
