Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joshua Miller, Founder of Joshua Miller Executive Coaching, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Joshua Miller, and I am a Master Certified Executive and Personal Leadership Coach who up-skills Fortune 100 emerging and senior leaders' mindset, skillset, and performance so they can lead with purpose. I am also an Amazon best-selling author of the book, "I Call Bullshit: Live Your Life, Not Someone Else's," as well as a Ted Talk speaker, a Linkedin Top 10 Linkedin Learning Instructor, and contributing writer for major industry-related journals.

My career experience has spanned both the advertising world and the world of leadership and organizational development. In advertising, I was the creative lead responsible for the campaign strategy for Fortune 100 brands. Today, I am an innovator, developing and supporting executive development and change management for many of the same companies.

Tell us about yourself

My first career was in advertising, developing, designing, and deploying branding campaigns (online, experiential, and print) for Fortune 500 brands. At the age of 24, I had a quarter-life crisis and realized I wasn't fulfilled, and I had a yearning to do more and give more but wasn't sure what or where. I was introduced to coaching (outlined in my book "I Call Bullshit") and immediately gravitated to what was possible. The next year was filled with endless 80hr work weeks while I continued to manage a team of 20 and multi-million dollar accounts in advertising while studying to get my ICF certification as a coach. Fast forward to today, I have since left that career behind and have had my own successful full-time coaching practice for twenty-three years.

What motivates me isn't the question. What motivates me is. My family is my core motivation and why I get up at 3:30 am every day to start my day. Knowing "why" I do what I do allows me to focus on being the best human possible. As a coach, it allows me to show up for my clients and create the space for them to grow and develop. Watching my clients transform their lives, leadership and selves are wonderful to witness.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have had many after two decades, from writing a best-selling book, delivering a powerful Ted Talk, and creating a coaching course for Linkedin Learning that was ranked #6 in the world in 2022 (out of 720 million users). The one that stands out the most is having been consistently and successfully coaching for over twenty years with no gaps, breaks, or dips. I have continuously scaled my business each year and, along the way, have been fortunate to work with academy award winners, Olympic gold medalists, professional athletes, and grammy award winners. I truly feel blessed and grateful to know, feel and see that my hard work continues to pay off.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Business owners must know how to manage uncertainty and must have a strong and unbiased sounding board in their corner. I have both. Knowing how to pivot and be resilient when navigating uncertainties such as a down market. Most coaches aren't marketers and don't know how to promote themselves. Leaning into my background as a designer, advertiser, and brand marketer - I have been able to manage any volatility in the economy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ask a lot of questions (remember, no one started off as an expert).
  2. Find a few people you admire and research how they got to be where they are today.
  3. Create a small group of champions for you and your goals, and lean in on them for support.
