Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Josh Wulf, founder of Wulf Cocktail Den, located in Reston, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Wulf Cocktail Den is a website devoted to cocktails. Located around the world, our customers are people who are looking to learn more about cocktails and expand their horizons. In addition to creating content for the website, we create cocktail menus for personal and corporate private events and teach virtual cocktail classes.

Tell us about yourself

My wife and I started the Wulf Cocktail Den in 2014. That year we finally attended a national cocktail conference we’d been aware of for a while. The people we met at the conference were quite welcoming to new members of the cocktail community. The experience inspired us to create the Wulf Cocktail Den. My motivation is to spread what I call the three Cs of cocktails: creating them, communicating about them, and connecting with people through them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Connecting with someone who learns something new, gets an idea, and desires to expand their cocktail horizons. It’s a great feeling when I see it happen, either in person or virtually. It’s also great when I can connect with complete strangers who bond over a cocktail or engage in a lively discussion.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Uncertainty. You can be disciplined in running your business, and you can plan for all sorts of contingencies, but you never know if or when something beyond your control will affect your business. I can’t predict the future. If you can, I suggest going to the nearest casino or opening an app on your phone and placing some large bets.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on the quality of your products or services and customer engagements over quantity. At the end of the day, your repeat customers are the ones who will bolster your bottom line.
  2. Embrace change. As someone who can be very resistant to change, I know that’s easier said than done. There’s certainly nothing wrong with recognizing and honoring how you’ve done things in the past, but you don’t want that to stifle what you could do in the future.
  3. Remember, reputation matters. Everything you do (or don’t do), whether it’s in person or online, helps you build and maintain your reputation. And that can lead to a successful business.
