Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jon Macaskill, Founder of Macaskill Consulting and Co-Host of Men Talking Mindfulness, located in Colorado Springs, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a “consulting” company, but I use that term very loosely. Under my consulting company, Macaskill Consulting, I do traditional leadership and management consulting, but I also do health and wellness consulting. I sell a product called the Scrum on the Go Board. I work with a friend, and we host a podcast called Men Talking Mindfulness. We offer mindfulness and meditation teaching, coaching, and retreats. I subcontract under the company MovementRX where we work together to help people live happier, healthier, more fulfilling, and more stress-free lives through movement and mindfulness. My customers vary from corporate executives to military veterans and first responders - anyone who is looking to live a better life or improve their team and organization!

Tell us about yourself

I’m a retired Navy SEAL Commander turned mindfulness and meditation teacher and leadership coach. I got into this space after having my own mental health challenges and found mindfulness and meditation to be life-changing and literally life-saving - so I feel it’s a duty and an obligation to pay it forward!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I believe my biggest accomplishment is when I hear from a client about how what I’ve introduced them to or taught them has helped them live a better life - personally and professionally. There’s no better professional accomplishment!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Marketing yourself. It sometimes feels wrong, and it’s something every entrepreneur must get past - it takes setting aside your ego and just putting it out there, knowing you will not be able to please all the people all the time!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just get started. Don’t wait until you, your service, or your product are perfect. If you do this, you’ll never start.
  2. With number 1 in mind, don’t settle. Iterate. Always work to improve yourself, your product, or your service.
  3. Lean on and learn from others. It’s impossible to run a successful business without leaning on and learning from others! Be humble and ask for help and advice!
