Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with D'Ana Joi Spencer, Founder of Joi Knows How, LLC., located in Long Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a proud multi-passionate creative life coach, speaker, freelance writer, and host of the Multi-Passionate Mastery Podcast. My clients and customers are multi-passionate creatives who neglect the narrative that choosing one thing is the only path to success.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a proud multi-passionate creative life coach, speaker, freelance writer, and host of the Multi-Passionate Mastery Podcast. (Also an avid lover of crystals, plants, and playing the ukulele.)

My first name is pronounced D'Ana (dee-on-uh), but you can call me Joi.
I go by my middle name because the internet can't handle apostrophes (I know, so silly), and Joi is a great way to describe my overall energy.

My mission is to rewrite the narrative that "choosing one thing" is the only path to success and inspire fellow multi-passionates to embrace their talents as a gift, not a burden. I spent most of my twenties feeling misunderstood and thought that success would never be available to me as a multi-passionate creative. The business world seemed to cater to specialists, and every coach I worked with told me the same thing: "you have to choose one thing to be successful."

After trying to fit into a box that was never meant for me, I decided to choose myself and stop fighting my multi-passionate nature. Best choice ever. In the following years, I turned my hobby blog into a life coaching practice, helping hundreds of multi-passionates FINALLY break free from the pressure of doing "all the things" at once.

My articles about thriving creatively have been published nationally in print in Mantra Wellness Magazine and various publications online. I've spoken on dozens of podcasts, including Being Boss, which has over 9 million downloads. Most of all, I'm grateful to serve a vibrant community of multi-passionates in my signature coaching program, Prioritize and Thrive.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is launching my signature coaching program, Prioritize and Thrive, and developing the method I teach inside. It's an honor to provide the level of support I wish I had had earlier in my journey.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The most challenging aspect of being a business owner is financial stress. Nobody likes to talk about it, but getting a business off the ground takes time, and for most of us, that doesn't translate into "10k months" for years. Staying the course and having faith that what I'm doing is working (even if it takes some time) is one of the most challenging mental games I've ever played.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start from a place of passion. If you're looking for a get-rich-quick idea, it's unlikely that you will stick around when things get complicated. When deeply rooted in passion, it's much easier to see things through.
  2. Create your support system early on. Entrepreneurship can be fiercely lonely! Even having one friend who understands what you're going through as a business owner can be hugely beneficial. You don't have to go through it alone.
  3. Be patient. Anyone who wants to start, run, and grow a business needs to understand that it's probably going to take several years to get where you want to go. Try to enjoy the process and each stage of growth that comes with it.
