Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with John Canfield, a meeting coach based in Holland, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am fundamentally a meeting coach helping teams learn to think more productively about conflict. When conflict is considered the point when teams discover options, managing option skills is the focus, not resolving conflict. I'd much rather manage options than resolve conflict.

Tell us about yourself

Having worked in two great companies (Intel and Herman Miller), I found I am most useful in helping others learn to think about how they conduct their business. As a meeting coach, I have the skills and personality to help teams learn to make better decisions AND build better buy-in.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Establishing and maintaining an individual consulting practice around the world since 1990.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balancing self-doubt and self-discipline.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Work deliberately to improve your self-confidence, travel, new experiences, active adult learner, etc. For example, see NOLS.EDU.
  2. Don't listen to the doubters.
  3. Accept and pursue the small percentage of contacts and customers you need to succeed.
