Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Johan Bernard, Founder of Les 3 Libertés, located in Aix-en-Provence, France.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help employees who no longer support their professional life to generate automatic income on their own to free themselves from the system. My clients are employees of all socio-professional categories. I have as many employees as executives. They have in common their desire to stop offering 10 hours a day to a company they don't like.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Johan, and I started my career as a marketing manager. I quickly understood that I was a simple pawn. I had the impression of being a spectator of my life, of not controlling anything, and I could already see myself doing this until retirement. Very quickly, I understood that I would never be happy if my life consisted of working on assignments that I don't like, for an unpleasant boss, and for a company that doesn't consider me. I then discovered that there were other ways than selling your time to earn a living. I started creating simple projects, which I then automated. I started earning money without doing anything. Of course, that required an initial time investment. But then? I didn't need to go back to it, and I could enjoy life: my loved ones, my passions, and taking care of myself. What motivates me is to maintain this quality of life that very few people will experience in their lifetime. Financial, geographical, and temporal freedom.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment is to have supported employees who are no longer employees. It is a huge satisfaction to help someone change their lives profoundly because you realize that you have had a decisive impact on their life. It makes me want to get up in the morning, unlike when I was an employee. Today, I like to work because I do it for the right reasons. The pride of having created a company and seeing it progress month after month is also a great accomplishment for me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The most difficult thing is to be patient. Accept that the results are not instantaneous, to believe in them when it feels like you are going backward. It is a matter of faith (not in the religious sense). You have to take a step every day, believe in it, and cling to your "deep why." It's the reason you started that keeps you going, not your bottom line.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start today, and stop making excuses to delay.
  2. Start with passion; if you don't like what you do, you'll never want to do it.
  3. Don't be afraid to fail because you don't fail until you give up. The question is not: "will it work" but "when"?
