Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joel & Maria Dominguez, Owners & Founders of Joel Salsa Dance Studio, located in New York City, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our businesses are JoelSalsa Dance Studio in NYC, and most of our students live in the surrounding area but come from all different backgrounds and are there for different reasons - from wanting to learn something new, join a community, exercise to wanting to improve their Salsa skills on the social dance floor. We also run a worldwide Online Salsa school called Salsa Classes Online, where students can learn and improve their Salsa skills from us from anywhere in the world and collaborate with passionate Salsa dancers like themselves.

Tell us about yourself

What first got us started and inspired us to open up our studio in NYC is that we wanted to teach a different way to dance Salsa - train students' ears to the instruments to be able to feel the rhythm and express themselves rather than just counting the numbers. The same goal inspired us to open up our Online school a few years later but reach the world :) We stay motivated by our students improving and growing as dancers and the way we have grown into one of the best schools in NYC and also online.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Learning and improving our marketing strategies, being able to constantly bring new customers, all while keeping our loyal customers happy and maintaining our reputation.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Hiring staff, keeping the balance between life and work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be very good at what you offer - your product, service, etc.
  2. Learn other skills besides the service you provide - especially marketing and customer service.
  3. Understand you have to invest - time, money, and hard work - especially in the beginning.
