Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joel Guthrie, Co-Founder of The Uncommon Project, located in Franklin, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Uncommon Project. It is exactly that. A project designed to uncover the magic between potential and success. A project designed to stimulate growth through change and uncommon action. Action that's main goal is to shake things up because, well, what else are we on this Earth to do.

We work with Pre Series A startups to develop a robust GTM strategy by building out comprehensive marketing, content, and revenue optimization blueprints. We inject durability, sustainability, and predictability into our client's businesses, opening up a clear path to scale. A clear path to stay. And a clear path to thrive in all facets.

We've been where you're at. We make scaling simple. And we actually give a shit.
Boldness. Precision. Execution. We are Uncommon.

Tell us about yourself

I've spent my entire career in the tech startup space and decided to launch a consulting agency with my business partner to help tech startups scale. It's been fantastic to take all my experience as a part of leadership teams across multiple industries and jump in to help founders transform their companies from great ideas to scalable businesses.

What motivates me every day is the opportunity to build a genuinely uncommon organization. To not just be another consulting agency that gives you advice and walks away but one that gets in the trenches with you to help you reach your goals. Not only that, but we develop our team members to reach their potential as well.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This is a tough one to answer. I've gotten to be a part of several funding rounds and product launches, but the accomplishment I am most proud of is the launch of this new agency. It was a considerable risk to walk away from all the other projects I was involved in to build my dream business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, it's the #nevernotworking part of it all. I am still learning boundaries, but there are always things you can be thinking about or actively working on 24/7. My business partner and I are currently testing an approach around building enough buffer time in our week to facilitate deep work and working on big rocks for each week instead of just daily tasks.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1. The problem you solve with your product or service is more important than how unique the idea is.
2. Customer experience is above everything. It doesn't matter how big or small you are if you can deliver an incredible customer experience throughout the entire relationship, you'll never have to worry about getting new biz.
3. Pick one ideal customer at a time. It's easy to go overboard thinking about all the different types of people/industries that can benefit from your product or service. Still, you can't do that well, especially at the beginning. Pick one and get to know them well, and you'll win.
