Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joel Evan, Founder of Joel Evan Coaching, located in Nampa, ID, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a holistic health coach that helps clients get to the root cause of their issues by rebalancing their bodies and mindset so that they are living the highest version of themselves. I help busy and motivated professionals lose weight holistically without giving up the foods they enjoy.

Tell us about yourself

I was a first responder for almost 15 years before leaving that profession to launch my coaching business. About 10 years ago, I watched my mother get diagnosed with breast cancer, and I felt hopeless that I was unable to help her, yet I knew all this information about health and fitness but couldn't even help the ones close to me. That, coupled with the birth of my first child, made me realize I wanted to shift directions in my career and learn all there was about holistic and natural health so that I could help people get to the root cause of their issues. I am motivated to end suffering from preventable health diseases and help people live the highest version of themselves. Because when they do that, they go out and impact the world, and that creates a ripple effect of positivity and goodness.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was actually launching the business. It's scary to leave your 9-5 job of security to the unknown. The first step is always the scariest I've found, but taking messy action over time has been the biggest learning lesson and has led to the most growth.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being an entrepreneur is not linear. There are a lot of ups and downs, so maintaining a positive mindset, even when times are bad, is very difficult. Sure, it's easy to have faith when everything is going well, but what about when the waves are crashing in and around you, and you feel like your boat is going to go under? What's your self-talk, then? Do you still have what it takes to push through?

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do daily mindset work.
  2. Take messy action daily, even when it's uncomfortable.
  3. Create systems in place early because as your business expands, it will be more difficult to scale and keep up the pace without strong systems already in place.
