Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joanne Sweeney, CEO of Public Sector Marketing Institute, located in Galway, Ireland.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My company is Public Sector Marketing Institute, and we specialize in digital marketing for the government and public sector.

Tell us about yourself

As a former journalist, I've always had an interest in public interest messaging, and I identified a gap in the digital marketing consulting and coaching industry six years ago. My own skill set and experience meant I was the perfect fit to help public sector pros navigate the Digital Age. I've written three books on the topic and have designed accredited online courses. I also host the award-winning Public Sector Marketing Show podcast.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Scaling my knowledge across the world in the form of my books, podcasts, and online courses. It's remarkable to know that from my home office in the west of Ireland, I can make an impact globally.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner takes tenacity, resilience, and lots of self-belief.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Practice the ability to take the lows with the highs is a game-changer. Once you realize that and accept that it's part of your growth, you find an equilibrium in your mind, even if there's no balance in your business world!
  2. Take calculated risks, and even some that are just pure gut instinct, but you better be able to take the hit if it doesn't work out.
  3. Set goals and have an implementation plan. Cost everything and introduce smart systems, write down your processes and improve them all the time; this includes your team.
  4. Do not distract from your core business offering. Say no to distractions. Say no to work that doesn't align with where you want to go.
