Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joanna Furtado, Founder of Joanna Furtado Therapy, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I offer individual counseling in a private practice setting to clients looking for support with a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma recovery, and personal development. I utilize an integrative approach to therapy that takes into account the whole person and works with both body and mind. I implement techniques and interventions from client-centered talk therapy, Bioenergetics, and Reiki.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been a compassionate person who is easily attuned to the struggles of others and capable of sitting with difficult emotions. I am drawn to this work partially because of my own healing journey and desire to support others in processing the challenges of life. After experiencing birth trauma with my son, I decided to return to school in my late 30s to study an alternative therapy approach at the Integral Healing Centre of Toronto under John Went RP. I later completed a diploma in applied psychology and counseling at the Kelowna College of Professional Counselling. I came into this field with ten years of experience in Eating Disorder Support, having worked at Sheena's Place and The Kyla Centre in Toronto. I am truly passionate about helping people overcome their struggles and connect to their inner wisdom and innate movement towards healing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is having successfully built a private practice that allows me to have balance in life. I began seeing clients six years ago and have since built a robust practice that allows me to do the work I love and have time for my family.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Owning a business requires that we wear many hats. From administrative work to filing taxes being a business owner requires a range of skills and the determination to push forward with a belief in the product or service we offer.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I am a believer in growing one's business slowly and steadily. I found it helpful to work part-time for the first few years while I grew my business. This took the pressure off and contributed to my practice's overall success. I would also recommend networking with others in the same profession to share tips and best practices. Lastly, believing in oneself is important. Perhaps working with a mantra or affirmation to hold the energy of what you wish to manifest.
