Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in cosmetic but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Kochenour, Founder of JKo Beauty, located in Philadelphia, Pa, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Jennifer Kochenour, and I am the owner and lead artist of JKo Beauty. JKo Beauty provides expert makeup artistry, specializing in bridal beauty, wedding day services, and makeup lessons. My clients and brides love that I create a customized experience best suits them. I am known for also creating looks that best enhance each person's natural beauty.

Tell us about yourself

I wanted to be in the beauty industry from the time I was a very little girl. I went to cosmetology school after graduating from high school. Also, I went to Westmore Academy of the Cosmetic Arts in Los Angeles, CA, shortly after getting my cosmetology license. I have been in the industry for 26 years and am still completely in love with what I do! I feel such a tremendous amount of joy working with both brides and my makeup lesson clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Over the past 26 years, I have had some really amazing experiences and accomplishments. My latest is developing the JKo Beauty cosmetics brand. My curated collection is created with my brides in mind but also for anyone who wants high-quality, ethical products that perform at a professional level with a luxury feel. My collection consists of products best suited for any occasion or season.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is wearing so many hats. However, as a small business, I never want to lose sight of the personal experience and connection that I have the opportunity to have with each person.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

To start a business, I strongly encourage that it is something you are truly passionate about. It will make everything you put into your business more than worth it.

I believe a great tip to running your business is never to stop learning or adjusting. Trends change, customer expectations change, and everything changes! Keep learning and always be open to shifting or trying something new.

Another tip for growing your business is to focus on the big picture in the long run. Never over-promise and under-deliver. Happy customers are happy to share their experiences, but so are unhappy ones. Nothing is better than building a reputation for providing great experiences!
