Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tracy Adkins, Founder of Jivana Ayurveda & Yoga, LLC, located in Eleva, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Jivana is a consciously created skincare and wellness company based on the ancient principles of Ayurveda but designed for the modern, savvy consumer.

Tell us about yourself

By trade, I am a Women's Health Care Nurse Practitioner with a passion for all things wellness and beauty related. As an avid fitness enthusiast, I've enjoyed everything from running to cross-fit and yoga. It was natural for me to dive into the study of Ayurveda as it is another form of medicine, albeit more holistic and preventative in its approach compared to allopathic medicine. When my youngest of 5 daughters developed a severe case of eczema, it was Ayurveda that I turned to treat her. Although my mission at the time was to study Ayurveda only for the well-being of my family, it turned into a business endeavor. I continue to put the same level of thought, passion, and integrity into every jar and bottle of skin care I produce.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Staying in business is an accomplishment, especially in an industry that is saturated and continues to be inundated with new launches from Indie brands and celebrities on a daily. Being relevant, knowing Jivana's place and value in the marketplace, and being true to my mission, myself, and the tradition of Ayurveda is integrity. That is the most worthy accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is needing to fill all the roles as one person. On the other hand, it is the best way to learn everything about all aspects of the business, from financial projections to website design, marketing, content creation, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a solid business plan and funding before you start.
  2. Make sure there is a defined need and market for what service or product you want to provide.
  3. Never burn a bridge.
