What's your business, and who are your customers?
Chicago Muay Thai Kickboxing Club primarily serves 23 to 38 years old, but we have plenty of kids and older as well. We cater to people interested in fitness as well as those who fight competitively.
Tell us about yourself
I started training in Martial Arts in 1994, and it became a big part of my life. In 2008 I lost my "corporate " job and decided Id rather teach martial arts than work a part-time job or full-time job, for that matter. I started a small "club" with about 15 members, where I rented space in another gym. From there, I grew. In 2011 I started my own gym.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing from nothing to one of the largest and most successful gyms in the country in only 11 years. We won 41 National belts since 2019, including back-to-back national team trophies in 2021 and 2022.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The unknown is my biggest issue. Ranging from major facility repairs, pandemics, Taxes, Internal employee and member problems, etc. There are a lot of threats to your business. You have to be constantly aware of them before they get out of hand,
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Get advice from someone who made the same mistakes you are about to make. If your business revolves solely around YOU, then you didn't create a business; you created a job. Do what you love; otherwise, it's not worth it. There is too much time invested.
