Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jill Barth, journalist, author, and editor, based in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a writer, editor, and communications professional. Wine, travel, and food publications commission me for expert and in-depth coverage. I also provide copy, content, and editorial strategy for wine industry clients.

Tell us about yourself

I have a degree in communications and a passion for wine, food, and travel. I love to take the varied and complex expertise of professionals in the field and translate that into stories that build excitement for diverse audiences.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've been able to see several exciting projects come to life: Extraordinary by Outshinery, a magazine that I wrote, edited, and project-managed travel coverage for print editions of Wine Enthusiast Magazine, and being selected as a speaker and panelist at the Wine Media Conference.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

When projects change or diminish, there is no safety net other than one's own ability to hustle and demonstrate usefulness to the next opportunity.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's perfectly acceptable to have a bridge income portal while you build your business. Don't jump off a cliff until you're ready.
  2. Don't underestimate the importance of knowing how to ask; if you aren't comfortable, then spend time working on this skill.
  3. Accept that there will be business tasks that don't light your passion but must be done professionally nonetheless.
