A Mother, an Educator, & Motivational Speaker - Jessica Lynch

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Lynch, a motivational speaker, based in Elizabeth, WV, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a motivational speaker. I travel the country giving inspirational speeches about overcoming struggles as well as on leadership. My audiences are schools, churches, corporation conferences, and veteran organizations.

Tell us about yourself

In 2003 while serving in Iraq, my Army unit was ambushed. I was captured and held as a prisoner of war. After being rescued, I became the first soldier to be rescued since Vietnam and the first female rescued since WW2. I loved telling my story and knew becoming a motivational speaker was the route I needed to do. My biggest motivation is my family. They give me the strength to keep overcoming my own obstacles, therefore being able to help others find their strengths.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest business accomplishments are being on the NYT bestseller list for my book 'I am a soldier, too' written by author Rick Bragg and personal growth. I went from being a small-town shy child to becoming a captivating speaker on stage, which allows me to grow professionally as well.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the hardest challenge I face is finding time for myself. I love doing for others, but sometimes I forget that I need to take care of myself so that I can continue giving 100% at my events.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The 3 tips I can give as a motivational and leadership speaker are:

  1. Find time for yourself and your family, first and foremost. If you're running on empty, you can't give your best to your audience.
  2. Set your goals and create a vision that you see as the best fitting for your company. As for me, my company is my name, brand, and life, so I set the most realistic yet motivating goals to help me better myself each day.
  3. Think mindset. If your mind isn't focused, you're not focused. To give your best, you must be at your best.
