Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Derksen, Founder of True to You Lifestyle, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a Transformational Life Coaching business. I work with women to help them discover their true selves and uncover what it is they would love in their life and how to get it. Much of the work I do with my clients is uncovering limiting beliefs and paradigms that don't align with their goals and learning to tune into our thoughts to re-pattern those old beliefs and create the life of your dreams.

Through coaching, events, and conferences I have the privilege of being a part of, I offer tools and inspiration for women to empower themselves to be the hero of their own stories.

Tell us about yourself

My business is about coaching and guiding women through life transformation. This really came out of my own personal experience with changing my entire life one habit at a time. I quickly saw an incredible ripple effect when I put my attention into one area of my life, how it beautifully created change in other areas as well. I became so passionate about it that I decided to get certified and help other people do the same. What motivates me each day is fear. Fear of living a life I don't enjoy, fear of being stagnant, fear of not feeling a heart full of joy and gratitude. I know I only have this one life, and that motivates me to live it as best I can.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being able to speak on the global stage and have the opportunity to make an impact on as many people around the world as possible.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things for me was trying to learn everything at once. When I first started my business, I didn't have the finances or resources to hire extra help, and trying to do it all and learning how to run a business was extremely overwhelming.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research - talk to other business owners who are in the same industry and really gain an understanding of what their day-to-day life looks like. And ask yourself, is that what you would truly love?
  2. Ask for help! Don't burn yourself out trying to do it all.
  3. Have a plan.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Running a business is extremely rewarding - especially when you get to make a positive impact on people's lives, but it also does take a lot of work. If you are passionate about it, don't give up. We all hear no, and we all fail at times. When that happens, use those moments for opportunities and growth, don't let them set you back!
