Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jeri Hoag, owner of Jeri Hoag Photography, located in St. George, UT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a luxury intimate boudoir photographer. My customers are the everyday modern woman from age 21 and up.

Tell us about yourself

I started my professional photography business in 2008. In the beginning, I photographed births, babies, maternity sessions, seniors, and families. In 2011, I made photographing newborns my primary focus. I closed my business in October 2020 to care for my ailing mother and to prepare my family to move to Utah. However, I am now ready to relaunch and rebrand. As of January 2023, I am specializing in luxury intimate boudoir portraits for the everyday modern woman.

I am on my own search for self-love, and photography is a part of that. While on my own journey, I want to connect with the women of Southern Utah and the surrounding areas and, through photography, help them to find confidence and self-love. My hope is that every client that comes to the studio will have a wonderful experience and leave feeling empowered and beautiful.

As a professional photographer, I strive for excellence in my work. I aim for quality in my photo style, attention to detail, communication, and reputation with my clients. I want my client's experience with Jeri Hoag Photography to be an excellent one as we create incredible images together. My clients are what motivate me to keep doing what I do each day. I love empowering women with photography.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment prior to moving to Utah was having my newborn images hanging up in 2 local hospitals and several OB/GYN offices. Now that I've moved to Utah and switched genres to boudoir, my biggest accomplishment is moving my business across the country.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I find the hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is being my own boss and keeping up with all that I do with the many hats I wear to keep things running smoothly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get legal rights from the start. Have the proper permits and licenses that are required in your state.
  2. Don't cut yourself short and charge your worth from the beginning. Set prices where you want them to be in the future and then offer discounts until you work up to charging full price.
  3. Hire people to help you with parts of the job that you don't enjoy, don't have time to do, or aren't good at doing.
