Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in digital marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Wolinski, a Brand & Marketing Consultant, based in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help small businesses work through their brand message and marketing strategy to obtain the best clients.

Tell us about yourself

My daily motivation is the same as why I branched on my own to provide marketing consulting services. Most businesses think marketing is needed when sales are down and they need a boost. The issue is excellent foundation marketing with clear targets specific to the brand, allowing leads to come in naturally and ensuring the clients you want to work with are the ones you work with. Having clear brand messaging is incredibly important. I found corporate businesses lose sight of this and are reactive in their strategy, which does not allow long-term success. They create more work and marketing pressure and remove the creative love those members have for the products and services. I want to help passionate people about my marketing passion so they never have to work against market trends.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest business owner accomplishment is creating a balanced work environment that helps nurture my creative and strategic brain. It has to lead to less burnout and more time to enjoy passions outside of work. I get to travel and learn more about cultures in the world has been an amazing opportunity that I do not regret.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Like many businesses, money seems to be one of the big things that occasionally make owning your own business hard. Creating a relationship with an owner or company is personal, so I understand and provide their consumers with the messaging that says who they are. When those businesses disregard payment but demand more excellence, restoring a balance is the hardest thing for me as an owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Please have a business plan. (If you do not set goals and have a vision for your business, it is hard to ask others to see the mission, either).
  2. Creative days are essential. (Taking one day to remember who you are outside of the business and restoring your balance can seem counterproductive).
  3. The customer experience is how you respect your brand, customers, and company. (Have you tried to use your website recently?).
