What's your business, and who are your customers?
Resurgence Counseling Center is a tailored mental wellness and therapy practice located in Kentucky. We primarily serve women but welcome all to our practice who feel we could be helpful.
Tell us about yourself
I began Resurgence Counseling after suffering through a nonprofit agency job that left me in terrible health, both physically and emotionally. I took the plunge to open my solo practice in 2018, and we have grown to 16 employees today. What motivates me each day is seeing my staff enjoy their job but then get to go home and live their lives. Employers have an opportunity to make ripple effects with changes in the lives of our employees while ensuring we promote work/life balance and protect against burnout or compassion fatigue.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say handing over part of the operations to my second in command. He is the clinic director, and learning to work as a team has challenged and encouraged me. It is never easy letting go of some of the control, but when you hire excellent staff that you can trust, it makes the entire process more fruitful. Our company is growing exponentially because of his work and my vision.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Taking time off and feeling like you can disconnect totally from the company is hard for me, but it is not only healthy but necessary.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Create a business plan, even if it is a skeletal one-page overview. Get familiar with business finances and budgets. Never, ever think that you are too good to clean the toilets.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Lunchbreaks should always be away from your desk and involve some kind of sunshine or happiness.
