Helping Children Struggling With Rashes - Jennifer Brand

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Brand, Founder and Owner of Jennifer Caryn Brand Nutrition, located in Culver City, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help children with dry, flaky, weepy, red, itchy, painful rashes navigate the journey to healthy skin and enjoy a childhood free from disruptive skin symptoms. Instead of managing symptoms with more diet restrictions, environment changes, and stronger creams, I use my 5 step signature approach, functional testing, and a detailed history to uncover unique imbalances at the heart of the problem and provide a roadmap to restore balance so that children can eat more foods, sleep better, feel good in their skin, and regain normalcy.

I’m on a mission to do everything I can to help children struggling with rashes like eczema get through those difficult times and grow up with the confidence they need to succeed. A big part of this is ensuring parents do the right things for their child’s skin instead of doing things that create bigger problems. Like going on elimination diets, which is some of the most common advice for rashes like eczema, but it can be detrimental to everyone.

I’ve seen too many children develop nutrient insufficiency and deficiency, worsening symptoms over time, disordered eating habits, and even full-blown eating disorders. The stress and anxiety these diets create for parents is another issue I see in my clinical practice. As if managing a child’s eczema and their debilitating symptoms aren’t enough already.

Tell us about yourself

My journey began during my childhood. I struggled with feeling different. I was born with a congenital difference, so my body didn’t look like everyone else’s. I distinctly remember how uncomfortable I felt in my body at a very young age.

In my clinical practice, parents share with me the worry they have that their children will feel this way too, and struggle with insecurities because of their visible rashes, in addition to the debilitating symptoms.

I’m passionate about helping children so that they don’t struggle as I did. They don’t need to. There is a better way. I’ve helped hundreds of children navigate the journey to healthy skin by identifying root cause imbalances at the heart of the problem and providing a roadmap to address them.

I studied nutrition and dietetics undergrad, went to grad school for public health and again for nutrition, then received my CNS (certified nutrition specialist) and LDN (licensed dietitian/nutritionist). With the degrees, certification, and license under my belt, I pulled together my experience as a child, my experience with elimination diets and diet restrictions (yes, I’ve been there too), and the fact that so many children struggle with chronic skin problems and aren’t getting any better, and I found my niche.

If you’re caring for a child struggling with chronic skin problems and are:

- Frustrated that your child’s diet is getting smaller and smaller
- Concerned your child isn’t getting enough nourishment
- Confused about what to feed your child because everything seems to cause reactions
- Fed up that more diet restrictions, environment changes, and prescription creams are the only ‘solutions’ you’re given
- Tired because when your child is up all night scratching, you’re up too
- Overwhelmed because you’ve tried everything, nothing has solved the problem, and you don’t know where to turn
- Afraid your child will just have to live with it

Know That:

- You don’t have to live like this, and your child’s first years shouldn’t be spent this way
- You don’t have to do this alone

I’ve helped hundreds of children enjoy a childhood free from disruptive skin issues, and I can help yours too. My business is 100% virtual. Because of this, I can offer my services to people worldwide! Visit this page to see what my clients’ experiences have been working with me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I love what I do. It’s beyond rewarding to help children feel better, have happy, healthy, symptom-free childhoods, and grow up confident. I can’t imagine a job more gratifying than helping children thrive.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Getting started as a solopreneur can be challenging. Feeling alone, finding direction, discovering what you're good at, and pulling it all together to provide a needed and meaningful service that will benefit others can take time! It's all about trusting yourself and knowing that you'll find your way by focusing on those you serve.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get mentored! No matter what kind of business you're starting, there are countless opportunities and options to have guidance from someone who has successfully gone through the process. Seek out that guidance.
  2. Have patience. Creating a thriving business is not an overnight process. It takes time and consistency. Don't give up. It can help to have a side gig while building your own business, so there's less pressure financially. Successful businesses are about providing a needed service. Focus on that, and the finances will follow (not the other way around).
  3. Trust that you can make it work. You must have faith in yourself and your abilities. You need to feel confident that you can succeed.
