Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Brinn, an Intuitive, Soul Coach & Reiki Master based in Sausalito, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a healing center and Reiki school in Sausalito, CA, which draws clients from all over the Bay Area. People come to my practice because they feel stuck in their life. They're looking for more ease and finding a deeper sense of peace in the face of life's stressors.

Tell us about yourself

I began a career in Reiki after my own back injury over 20 years ago. I vowed to be kinder to my body and embarked on my own healing journey with yoga and meditation, which led to an opening of my intuitive senses. I realized something was calling me to do something different with my life. I felt lighter emotionally, more curious, vibrant, and engaged. The curiosity allowed me to navigate life with a new sense of wonder. I left the tech world and took a month-long solo trip to Kauai. Between swimming in the Pacific waters, kayaking the Na Pali Coast, dodging the wild roosters, and befriending a toad-catching dog named Max, I received guidance to do healing work. Something whispered to me, "wake up," and guided me here.

I've now been in private practice as an Intuitive, Soul Coach & Reiki Master for over 18 years. It has been an absolute joy making a career out of my soul's calling: to guide clients back to their true state, discover their own potential and live a more balanced life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I began a career in Reiki back in 2004, hardly anyone knew what Reiki was. It was my determination that this was a powerful & effective healing modality that kept me going to build my practice. I now run a healing center with several practitioners along with a Reiki school where I've taught and mentored hundreds of students to embark on their own Reiki journey.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There is always uncertainty, even when things are going well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't quit your day job yet. You might have to work a side hustle to cover expenses before your business flourishes. Know that it's only temporary, and stay connected to your dream...
  2. Connect with your "why." Why are you doing what you're doing? When you understand your "why" you become more intentional with every business move.
  3. Schedule self-care. Being self-employed means that you're always working even when you're not. There's always something to do. Be sure to balance it with good self-care to prevent burnout.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't be afraid to follow your calling. I see hundreds of clients every year who feel unhappy and stuck in a job because it brings them financial security. While running a business can bring uncertainty in financial gain if you love what you do, you'll create a way to make it, and abundance will follow!
