Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenn Sharman, Owner of Intent Health Clinic, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Intent Health Clinic is a unique massage therapy clinic located in Vancouver, Canada. Our team of Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) is evidence-based and trauma-informed. That means we keep up-to-date on the science of massage therapy, and we understand the impacts of trauma and how to make adaptations to ensure comfort and safety. We treat people with a range of conditions and experiences—from musculoskeletal injuries to chronic pain, stress, neurological conditions, and pregnancy. We bring care, compassion, clear communication, and curiosity to every treatment.

Tell us about yourself

I was an RMT for five years before opening Intent Health. I was passionate about the mental health benefits of massage, and I was learning exciting new information about how manual therapy works. I wanted to create opportunities for RMTs to learn together and incorporate best practices in patient care. It was important to me that our explanations to patients were based on current scientific evidence.

What motivates me is continual learning and growth as a person and a professional. I've learned so much from patients and coworkers and from the process of running a business. I love creating spaces where RMTs and patients can connect, learn and feel at ease.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating a team of evidence-based, trauma-informed practitioners who truly make a difference in their patients' lives. Some of our reviews from patients are so heart-warming they might bring a tear to your eye.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Maintaining work-life balance. As a business owner, there is always an endless list of things you could be working on. It's so important to create opportunities to have fun and refuel - whether that's through quiet time or connections with others. Create space for rest, joy, play, and adventure!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research: don't jump into anything spontaneously (like business partnerships or leases).
  2. Create a support network: find a mentor, have a lawyer review your contracts, connect with someone who has experience running the type of business you want to run, and ask them for advice.
  3. Schedule time to rejuvenate: vacation time with loved ones moving your body, spending time in nature, and all the other things in life that you enjoy.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being an entrepreneur presents endless opportunities for creativity and growth. There's always something new to learn. Enjoy the process and reach out for help when you need it!
