Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenie Gospodinova, Founder of Jenie's Dance School, located in Montréal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Ballet and pre-ballet courses for children, teens, and adults.

Tell us about yourself

Ballet is the love of my life. I have been dancing since I was 4 years old. At 18, after health problems, I stopped dancing and opened my first ballet school in Europe. In the meantime, I was studying speech therapy. After graduating from university, for 5 years, I worked as a speech and language therapist in my country, Bulgaria. After my immigration to Canada and the problems of being accepted as a speech-language therapist here, I decided to go back to my real love: ballet. I saw in my in acceptance of my Europe diploma as an opportunity to focus on my realization as a ballet teacher. Only a year after I arrived in Montréal, I opened my ballet school.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The trust and the confidence my students and their families have been giving me year after year for almost 20 years.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having no work hours. The business owner is always thinking about the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The biggest breaks for your realization are the ones you put in the tires of your ambition.
  2. Don't focus too much on where you want to arrive. Better enjoy the travel itself.
  3. Instead of provoking panic with the big goal you put for your business, remember that the small steps are the most important. When it is too hard, focus on your feet. Travel with small steps.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I believe that arts connect us to the inside child that we care for our entire life. Staying young is to keep dancing, singing, drawing, and creating.
