Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Jenelle Kim, founder of JBK Wellness Labs, located in San Diego, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the founder and formulator at JBK Wellness Labs, a doctor of Chinese medicine, a 9th generation master herbalist, and the author of Myung Sung: The Korean Art of Living Meditation. I formulate for some of today's most recognized natural beauty and personal care brands carried in high-end retailers; through my lab, we are contract manufacturers that are not affiliated with one brand but rather collaborate with incredible entrepreneurs that are committed to creating amazing products with our superior formulas.
Tell us about yourself
I am devoted to integrating the philosophy, medical wisdom, and expertise of East Asia with the advancements of modern life and medicine of the West in order to touch and positively affect the lives of others. As a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and a Nationally Board Certified in Herbology, Oriental Medicine, and Acupuncture. I have completed extensive training in East Asia under some of the most respected doctors in the field of Oriental Medicine and am the custodian of her lineage's proprietary Bi Bong® formulas; it is my wish to share these with as many people as possible in this life. Through my lab, I am able to do so.
My book, Myung Sung: The Korean Art to Living Meditation by published by Watkins and distributed by Penguin Random House. Myung Sung is available globally in six languages, Czech, Thai, Italian, Croatian, Spanish, and Serbian. In my book, I break down the principles of Myung Sung, offering a way to achieve a life of balance and happiness by enjoying the positive benefits of meditation every minute of every day. This unique approach to meditation combines lessons on movement, and natural medicine learned from a lifetime of experience studying Eastern philosophy, Eastern medicine, and martial arts. This book has been a long-term goal of mine, and I am honored to be speaking about all three pillars that are my expertise, medicine, movement, and meditation.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a business owner, growing our lab to what it is today is my biggest accomplishment. We started out very small and grew to over 20 employees, and are one of Southern California's fastest-growing companies, Inc.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest I'd say is finding the right team, we are fortunate to have an incredible team, but it hasn't always been that easy. We had a lot of lessons learned along the way, but without those, we wouldn't be where we are today.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be sure to have a clear vision of what it is you are trying to build.
- Find your niche, and own it.
- When you have people in your company that you can trust and depend on, do everything to make sure they know they are valued and appreciated.
