Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Moe,
Managing Partner of Java House, located in Carmel, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Java House is a coffee company focused on one thing: amazingly smooth cold brew coffee. Our customers are people who enjoy quality products and quality people. We serve our local community through our ten coffee bars as well as communities around the country via our website and Amazon.

Tell us about yourself

Java House is a family business - I am the Managing Partner, my wife manages our New Store Design & Construction, and my father-in-law is our CEO and Partner.

I used to HATE coffee for two reasons:
• Any coffee I've ever had is too bitter or too acidic.
• If I ever decided to have coffee, I had to dress it up with tons of creamer and sweetener so it didn't taste like coffee anymore - I'm not someone who generally enjoys sweet, sugary foods.

My father-in-law founded and runs a business that manufactures food products, including sweeteners and coffee creamers. In 2018, he decided to get into the coffee game and developed our proprietary brewing process, which enables us to serve our amazingly smooth coffee. At first sip, I was hooked.

Java House originally launched our Single Serve Cold Brew Pods at retail. Shortly after our launch, we decided to open our first coffee bar to bring the brand to life, and we haven't looked back since. My biggest motivation is the vision we have for this business - becoming the global coffee brand.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Prioritizing family through continued high growth.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Knowing when to invest in building out your team, evaluating how big that team needs to be, and where to focus that team (or team member).

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You don't need a finished product to sell your product.
  2. Make sure you're intimate with your business's financials.
  3. Prioritize your short and long-term focus and make sure you have measurables along the way to gauge success.
