Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Janna Watson, an artist based in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an artist. My customers are art lovers.

Tell us about yourself

My grandfather was an artist. He taught me as a child to paint “the essence of a tree.” I find joy in my work, and for me, it is also a daily spiritual practise and discipline.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to build my dream studio with large windows in my forest.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

A “hard” thing is taking risks, such as taking on overhead costs for future growth.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get as much exposure as possible. When you put yourself out into the public, whether it is on social media or a fair or market, be sure to pay attention to feedback in a humble, receptive way.
  2. Work with other people who balance out your weaknesses. Be honest about what you aren’t the best at.
  3. Make sure you know what is very important to you. Turn it into an aesthetic and refine your brand constantly. Make sure what you put out is consistent and clear.
