Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Janice Litvin, Wellness Speaker & Author, based in Walnut Creek, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a professional speaker, facilitator, and workshop leader who helps leaders and their teams banish burnout. My customers encompass various organizations, including government, healthcare, education, associations, and private industry.

Tell us about yourself

What got me started on my business was a foray into teaching Zumba Fitness. After a few years, I realized there was a strong need for companies to engage their teams in wellness, which includes physical health, mental health, financial wellness, etc. As I met with various groups, the issue of burnout rang louder than any other. Having recovered from my own burnout, I saw a perfect fit.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner incorporates getting my book, Banish Burnout Toolkit, into the marketplace. This workbook teaches people how to change their behavior in reaction to stress. With this book, I travel around speaking to all kinds of groups, including emerging leaders, women leaders, as well as individuals inside organizations.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is doing it all. While I enjoy sales and marketing, the hard work begins after I close the deal. I spend a lot of time studying each client to deeply understand their needs, which means the psychology of their teams, and what makes their organization unique.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a mentor. Don't try to sit out there on your own. Go to seminars, and network with other business owners in your niche. Join industry associations.
  2. Consider offloading some of the logistics to a virtual assistant.
  3. Volunteer for leadership positions. I am now the president of the San Francisco chapter of the National Speakers Association, which is a huge responsibility but gives me immense pleasure.
