What's your business, and who are your customers?
Area is a design and furniture store that provides personalized service and product expertise with access to modern and contemporary home furnishings sources from a global assortment of designers.
Tell us about yourself
The phrase "necessity drives innovation" was completely at play in my decision to open this business. The lack of modern design in our city drove us to open Area 10 years ago.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
On the personal side, five years felt like a significant accomplishment, and I think that feeling is true for many entrepreneurs. We marked our tenth year a few months ago. For me, that's a milestone.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The multitude of "hats" you need to be able to wear is an ongoing challenge. You need to be able to play many roles well if you want to succeed.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get a mentor who has been in the weeds and knows what tough times really mean. You need someone you can bounce ideas off of, which will give you good advice and help you stay in your lane.
- Get a good Bookkeeper and be able to work with that person. I can not stress this enough. Know your numbers. Know where you are at all times.
- Purposefully network with the right people.
