Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with James Pesch, owner of James Pesch LLC., located in Tulsa, OK, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our clients vary from companies & organizations desiring deeper relationships professionally and personally, both inter-departmental and with their sales and customer relations teams, to individuals who are seeking alternatives to traditional talk therapy to overcome negative habits, beliefs, or past trauma.

Through mindfulness, mental health, and interactive breakout sessions and workshops, I help guide groups along a journey through how the mind works to our benefit and demise with visuals, handouts, and one-on-one engagement. When working with individuals seeking alternative talk therapy, the modalities used are NLP and Hypnosis.

Tell us about yourself

Simply put, I help people fix broken systems, processes, and procedures
over the past 16 years, people & corporations have hired me to do that as quickly and affordably as possible. Using my skills and expertise in a few very specific areas of Mental Health, NLP, Hypnosis, Neuroscience, Linguistics, "armchair psychobabble," Theology, Religion, Philosophy (Stoicism), Stage Mentalism/Magic, Formal Logic, Math, the Scientific Method, Diversity & Culture, Micro-expressions, body-language analysis, and Communication (Non-IT Related).

It sounds crazy, but I'm hired to deliver out-of-the-box solutions to solve:
• Cash Flow
• Phobias
• Inefficiency (Culture, Interdepartmental, Vision)
• Apathy (Professional/Personal)
• Addictions
• PTSD
• Self-Doubt
• Memory Degeneration
• Learning Disabilities
• Eating and Fitness struggles
• Goal Setting and Attainment
• Team Communications, Empathy-Focused Sales, & Skills Workshops

In 2017, I discovered I was neurodivergent, which enables me to see the world through a slightly different and often more helpful lens and has become more and more relevant as I share my story. I love to help people understand how their mind works for and against them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Working one-on-one with individuals to help them overcome addictions and negative self-talk and achieve goals are by far the most rewarding aspects of what I do. However, my biggest achievement has been being asked to be an adjunct instructor for Tulsa Tech's business division and an instructor for state-accredited CEU courses for mental healthcare professionals in Oklahoma based on my demonstrated expertise in the relevant fields.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

With the constant noise of social media, i.e., TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc., it is becoming increasingly difficult to be discovered organically or by paying for exposure. It doesn't matter how skilled you are; if no one can find you or hear about what you do, you can not help.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Regardless of how much passion you have for something, you must determine whether your passion is a hobby or a profession. Many people are passionate but not profitable. You will always feel like a failure if you are not able to turn a profit IF you misidentify your passion as a profession. Hobbies are ok to have too.
  2. Start small with a close circle of friends and family. There is a reason MLM companies focus their attention on recruiting people with large social networks of supportive families and friends. If the people who love you don't want to purchase what you are selling, you may want to reevaluate the need for your product or service.
  3. Running a business is hard. The day-to-day of an entrepreneur is a roller coaster. Surround yourself with as many "successful" trusted professionals and colleagues you can count on to be brutally honest with you when you run into obstacles. Unless, of course, you are buying a franchise or a turn-key, in that case, most of these resources should be included in start-up material.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There is plenty out there for all of us, but it takes hard work, resourcefulness, and a lot of luck to be truly successful long term. Is it worth it? Most days, I'd say absolutely, and that gets me past the days when it's tough.
