Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jake Early, owner of Jake Early Studio, located in Tempe, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I create and hand-print serigraphs as well as paint murals. My customers are anyone who enjoys original art, both with my prints and commissioned murals, as well as municipalities and public arts programs.

Tell us about yourself

I can't remember a time when I didn't have paper and a pencil in my hands. I've literally been drawing and making art for as long as I can remember. I genuinely love to create, draw and make prints, and to be honest. I never saw an alternative career other than to do what I love doing. My business really took off about 22 years ago when one of my prints found its way to a local gallery, and from then on, I began working with the gallery, and my business has grown from there.h

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Simply being able to make a living for myself and my family by doing what I love to do and doing it on my own terms is my greatest accomplishment. It's really satisfying to work with big companies or organizations I admire, but just the fact I am able to do what I do and live a comfortable life is enough.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, it's the "business" side of it all. Negotiating contracts, tracking my expenses and taxes, chasing leads and new jobs, plus all the bookkeeping. All these are important facets of owning a business, but it's not my favorite part of it all. Of course, it's a necessary chore, and it goes along with all the benefits of being a business owner, so I try not to complain too much.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be willing to work tirelessly.
  2. Don't sell yourself short.
  3. Social media/internet is incredibly powerful. Make use of it.
