Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jaime Reeves, a therapist, author, coach, public speaker, and entrepreneur based in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a Licensed Marriage and family therapist with a private practice specializing in individual and couples therapy, providing professional and industry consultations. I've been practicing psychology for more than a decade. I utilize a variety of integrative therapeutic approaches depending on what is most appropriate for the client presenting at the time. I primarily work with high net-worth and professional individuals and their families but set aside time and space in my practice to work with those who are not in the financial position to gain access to my services.

Tell us about yourself

My father gave me my first spark of inspiration. He was a veteran who suffered a great deal in his life, and his ability to push forward and do good in the world has always inspired me. The motivation for establishing my practice is a combination of the civic duty my father instilled in me and my passion for facilitating meaningful change throughout society through education, advocacy, consultation, and clinical practice.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say my biggest accomplishment to date is my high success rate among my clients. I pride myself on being able to "graduate" my clients out of therapy, effectively working myself out of a job ironically. My second biggest accomplishment would be the publication of my book, The Boundaries Journal. That was a huge milestone for me. I have a deep love of books and have wanted to be published since I was 5 or 6, playing library in my parent's living room.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time management must be, by far, the hardest thing to manage when running a business. It takes sacrifices to be successful, and sometimes that's not fun, but boy, is it worth it. I've learned to prioritize the things that matter most to me while still pushing my business goals forward. It was a hard learning curve, and I still make mistakes, but eventually, we all find our rhythm. My hardest lesson was learning to diversify how the business makes money and being creative in how I scale products and services to optimize growth.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be honest about what you're good at, what skill sets you have, and where your interests are. Do your due diligence and educate yourself on your industry or product. Become financially literate; always write up a business plan and surround yourself with people who push and motivate you.
